View Full Version : Difficulty Rating

I was thinking that a difficulty rating system could be worked out for the VC games. This way a gamer that is a casual gamer will not be stuck with a very difficult game or the opposite for a hardcore gamer.

Maybe, that would take hours and hours at this point though, won't it?

Love the idea but difficulty levels are a bit subjective. For example I think that Super Ghosts n Ghouls is harder than a concrete boob job. Others, according to my post/poll do not.

Obviously it’s going to be subjective, but rating games is subjective too. You’re always going to have people who are different in their opinion but the majority will show through. If 7 out 10 people say Super Ghost & Goblins is the toughest game, then people will get the point.
This was just an idea. I guess if it would take a lot of time then we’ll skip on it.

Stop giving me work to do!
You know I love games like Super GnG, splatterhouse, contra III don't you? If I was deciding was was hard and not I'd list all these as medium even though many think they are the hardest of the hard!! 8)

Splatterhouse= 4
Super GnG= 7
Super Probotector= 9
I find splatterhouse easy peasy now, and can complete it anytime, though it was pretty hard the first time.
I only just managed to get to level 4 on Super Probotector after a long time of trying to beat 3 on the easiest difficulty and top lives

Super Probotector is never that hard!! I personally think super GnG is harder.

I must be just crap at the type of game then. But that spider thing that keeps stabbing you and knocking you off the wall, and the metal robots on level 3 are solid!

The thing is with the spider thing it has definite tactics to beat it. It's really just a case of staying still then moving just before it lunges out to get you.
The robots are not too bad either. Hang up in the top left corner and blast the smaller ones with the C weapon. When the dad comes out just keep grappling around the room in a clockwise direction to avoid his attacks.
Tactics kid, old skool style! lol 8)

3 catorgories would suffice - Easy, Medium or Hard although Super GnG might just be off the scale as with Donkey Kong Country 2 at the moment

I like the three catogory idea!
How about Ninja Gaiden? I would say it's hard, but maybe I just suck.
I'm stuck on 6-2. I've played that level over and over and over.........
I finally passed it last night only to die at the next boss and be sent back to 6-1!

I'm with RMA. Some people rave on about Special World on Super Mario World being stupidly hard, and I breeze through it.
When Ninja Gaiden X-BOX came out everyone said how hard the first boss was, and I done him on my first attempt.
Technically it was my second attempt though, my bro got stuck on him and gave me the pad. So me not knowing any controls at all was getting my head pounded in whilst trying to figure out what "jump" was (To leg it, lol) and what "sword attack" was (To kill him). Naturally I died.
So then I began a new game and went though the training, lol.
But then there's other things like GnG and Alma (Boss 9 of Ninja Gaiden X-BOX) that I struggle on for ages whereas some people breeze through that.

I think you can get a lot more shots than that in. When it lunges across it sticks into the wall for a second or so. Get the C weapon and pummel it. It'll only get a chance to come at you about 3 times with that tactic.
tip: you can hold the c weapon in reserve and use the S shot for general purposes. if it's in reserve you wont lose it even if you die. it's too slow for general use but great on bosses!!

There he goes again. Still, subjectivity is not really a great divider. I'm one of the people that finds the games above hard yet can one-credit Metal Slug 3, but if you were to take a poll of the majority, those four games would probably rank above the vast majority in difficulty. You could argue that almost no game is hard unless its design is broken, since most can be conquered with enough practice. But I suppose there are games that simply require superior motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination. Both types would be considered difficult, just by different people.

For the difficulty thing, instead of the reviewer giving it a single rating, make it a poll on each review. As people read it they can vote on the difficulty (1-5, 1-10, etc.) and have the difficulty shown be an average of what has been voted. Perhaps require a forum login to be able to vote on difficulty.

What an excellent idea...same could be done for ratings!

I allways het multiple shots in with no risk of getting hurt. Shoot at him diagonally right after you dodged him.

Yeah, it's funny how certain games can be okay for some but crushingly hard for others. I mean, I find the Metroid games ridiculously difficult, and yet everyone else seems to breeze through them, but on other games, more often than not it's the other way around. My wife thinks I'm some kind of video games savant, but she's never seen me play Metroid!

I'll agree on the first Metroid, just start with 30 energy? You're dead after one hit, so you must really play it trough in one go. And the Motherbrain, hardest boss I've ever met.

Yeah, the world was rather big. It was really confusing in Norfair and Kraid's Lair. Brinstar was ok though, just two big towers. Although Metroid is a nice NES game I would prefer the newer ones any day. Going trough a maze is funnier with a map :D
