Ever watch the kids show Garfield and Friends? This used to come on everyday before school when I was a kid. Hilarious show and it was followed by Dennis the Menace cartoon. Those were the days. Although they might have only been shown in the US I don't know.
Yeah, that was the Garfield Cartoon I meant. It had 2 Garfields and 1 Farmyard cartoon (Usually) and I watched it religiously, lol.
Which Dennis though?
Because the U.S Dennis is bleh, but the U.K version rocks! IMO
So did the Dennis you like, wear a Black and Red striped jumper? Or Denim dungarees?

Ha, Denim dungarees. I never saw the UK version (only thought there was just one dennis) but I'll defend our version to the grave. Why was our Dennis bleh? I really can't see how it was that much different. The U.S. version had all the trademark characters and excellent writing and direction. Chalk this one up as another STRONG disagreement! By the way a black and red jumper? Sounds like bizzaro Dennis.

Your Den was a bit lame. Yeah he was a menace, but in the 50's. Our Den started in the Beano comics and was a hardcore menace 8)
Along with his dogs Gnasher and Gnipper.
I'll see if youtube has an ep.

This is the Dennis I'm talking about. Not the television show or the comic series from the 50's and 60's.

True he wasn't hardcore but its the lighthearted humor that made it great. How much more of a menace can a kid with a sling shot be?
Oh and I was wrong he has red overalls with a black and blue striped shirt. HaHa gnasher and gnipper? It's ruff! And only ruff! And check it, ruff was voiced by Phil Hartman. You may still have a valid point on Dennis but gnasher and gnipper get owned by that fact.

Hartman?! Wow. I remember him from such shows as SNL and the Simpsons 8)
Yeah, your Den had a Slingshot. Ours had a giant Menace robot to destroy the town with. Granted that was just 1 ep, but still. Beats the crap out of a Slingshot
Plus he had Softy Walter and Petunia to punish for being wusses and his Friends Pie Face and Curly rocked hard too 8)
Thier antics were far worse than calling the next door neighbour by his first name.

Shame this is the only one online. It's alright, but it's not him at his best.

Have you ever seen the 1986 cartoon of Dennis the Menace? It has antics of the same nature, granted, not as "in your face" as that was. The US cartoon seems to be more lighthearted as I said before. But that doesn't make it more lame. In fact I think thats where most of the charm lies is the subtlety and innocence of the humor. It feeds into alot of the jokes and is usually written in a pretty clever but sly manner (at least as far as I can remember. Like I said I used to watch it when I was a kid. That was like 12 years ago.). There is also another thing we have to take into account here. These shows are about 10 years apart from each other. Its geared towards completely different generations so that may have something to do with the fact that you think its lame. I was actually a little older than what the intended audience probably was and yet I could still appreciate it. That has to count for something.OH yea and good call on making this its own thread. I try my best to stay on topic but some things I just can't let go of until I get my point across. Which happens to take a while with me.

Ditto.
It used to be on Sunday mornings when I saw the U.S version. And I tryed to watch it, but I was a huge fan of the Beano (Which has been running Den since the 50's aslo) and all I could think was "This isn't Den the Men". So maybe it's a regional thing.
We've both grown up with Den the Men, only totally different versions of him. And naturally, we love the one who we saw first and more frequently.
I wonder though, which came first? And... Are thier more versions of him?
I'll Wiki it when I'm done here.
I'll be interested in other peoples thouhgts though, but we're the only guys who seem to come here this late, lol.

Yea I'm a late nighter, I work second shift so I do most of my gaming and internet usage when I get home at night. It would be interesting to see which came first tho. Oh and naturally whatever version someone is accustomed to and fond of is going to be the "best". We may be arguing points that will never meet but its fun nonetheless.

HaHa just checked Wiki and you might get a laugh out of this."Coincidentally three days earlier another Dennis the Menace debuted in the United States. The two strips should not be confused — as a result of this the US series has been retitled Dennis for UK consumption."Close but no cigar.

Den U.S was first seen March 12th 1951.
Den U.K... March 15th 1951.
Me thinks they're both made by the same guy. H/O.
Yeah, tis fun :D

Both had the same idea. Wii clearly can't beat a P.C for speed.
Still though, what a coincidence.

Yea I'd say thats a pretty HUGE coincidence. It obviously had to of been planned by both creators. Wiki listed a different creator for the UK version right?

Hank Ketcham created the US Dennis
David Law created the UK Dennis
It feels like it was just an amazing coincidence that both comics got called Dennis the Menace.

Really? I mean the nature of both comics are almost the same though. Naughty, mischevious little boy getting into all kinds of crazy antics both named Dennis the Menace. I could be wrong but it seems both versions have the same format and characters.

UK Dennis appeared in the kids' anthology comic Beano, and if you look at the other characters included there, they're pretty much all mischievous kids playing pranks on grown-ups, so Dennis is part of a trend there. Honestly, I think the UK/US Dennises (Dennisi?) are the result of coincidence more than anything.

You're probably right it just seems so damn supsicious though.

Coincidence, totally and utterly. It's not as if either had access to the others material in those days!
My personal preference is for Dennis US. More subtle and better cast of characters. Walter the Softy? Spare me.

i used to watch the us version (which i clearly remember as 'Dennis', no mention of 'the menace' was ever made in the uk run). it was shown in blocks with Garfield and Heathcliff.
the American tv show was far better than the uk one, the uk show being the result of ex stream dumbing down.
but the whole Beano comic and its spin off have been on a down slide since the early ninety's. once politically correct thinking stopped him being able to pick on the softy's, and more importantly forced his dad to hang up the slipper, the comic lost its edge.

Wow, this thread is bringing back memories of the Beano! :D
Despite not being anywhere near a 'menace', I did used to enjoy it. I eventually got pretty tired of it (And I was about 11 by the time we had stopped getting it, heh), but still pretty cool. Better than the Dandy anyway!
I remember that cartoon too. Odd theme tune, and it felt pretty dumbed down (In one episode Dennis tried to be a school prefect! Or something similar), but still good fun. I even got a video or two of it from the legendary Beano Club!

Desperate Dan was good in the old days. he used to get into proper fights with cactus man, kick his ass, then go down the pub for owl hoot juice.
these days he acts like a large 3 year old.
