Retro Bros.
18th August 2008, 11:40 AM
I'm going to start list for people, to record retro consoles!
The limit in age for consoles is the PS1, Dreamcast and N64.
Handhelds can go up to the Gamboy Advance, and old computers such as the Commodore 64 are also for the list. I am also including things like the Mega CD & The 32x
Perhipherals are now allowed!
Use unnoficial foer non-official products like controllers.
For Officiail stuff, itys just not said, so only unnoficial is stated.
Use "+" as a prefix when you get something &
Use "-" as a prefix when you lose/sell something.
Example.
+ Sega Megadirve (to add your Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) to the list).
- Atari 2600 (to remove your Atari 2600 from the list).
---
Anyway for me.

Question: Are you counting different versions of consoles seperately, for instance the various versions of Mega Drive/Genesis? I would say yes they should be counted seperately as this is a hardware thread.
All systems are European/PAL versions.
+ Master System
+ Mega Drive (original type)
+ Mega CD (original type), does this count as a system?
+ Saturn (newer type)
+ Dreamcast
+ Dreamcast
+ Dreamcast (can't have enough of them)

+ Playstation 2 (small version)
+ Gamecube

+ Game Boy Advance SP

I was originally planning too, but I then decided against it due to its more for the most popular retro console.

They're both classic fat models. One of them is getting tinkered and sold eventually. I'll updated when I do!

It's definitely foolish of me to bring up the old retro vs non-retro debate here but I just can't leave this one alone: If you're including the Dreamcast I really think you should include the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube or else you're missing out half the generation, that would be like including the Master System but not the NES.

Although it's in the same generation, it is longer dead outside Japan (ended in 2006 there) where as xbox games were still alive 2 years ago and they are still making,

Sega "officially" stopped supporting it with games in 2002, right? Think it was then they announced that they would quit the hardware market.
So I would say that Dreamcast is really more "retro" than the GCN/PS2/X-Box, even though it was supported by the homebrew market for a long time (and still is to a certain degree).
SegaFan
20th August 2008, 10:48 PM
Actually Sega officially stopped supporting the hardware in 2006 and stopped licencing games in 2007. Not just homebrew, there were officially licenced games right up until last year including one multiformat game released on both the Wii and the Dreamcast on the same day. This is all Japan only but it still counts. Apart from that the technical capabilities put it in the same league as PS2/Xbox/GC.
But it doesn't matter, as long as no one is implying the Dreamcast is in the same generation as the PS1 that's perfectly fine. ;)
Joxe
21st August 2008, 01:19 PM
Ah, thanks for that explanation, although it wasn't that alive outside Japan unfortunately and since I don't think anyone is Japanese on this board I would say that including the others from the same generation would be a bit too close. But I guess that's a matter of opinion.

Its actually a pretty funny story. I got my first playstation back in 04. I came across another one at a Half Price Books store real cheap so I bought it for myself to use. Fast foward to October of 05 when I first moved into my new house, There was quite a bit of stuff left behind by the previous owners and I just happened to find another PlayStation and a stack of games (some crappy) to boot. Funny thing is I have all these PS1s and not a single memory card.

How recent are we supposed to go on the consoles? And how small are we going on accessories? I can list things like controllers and stuff if we're doing that. And I have more recent consoles I can add to the mix as well.

I did.
And my post earlier reflects that. Don't know why I asked again. But I didn't go through and list every controller that I have, just the "special" ones like the light guns or controllers that didn't come with the system (like the NES Advantage).

Yeah, first post isn't very clear on what counts under the periphs category. (I don't think anyone is paying attention anyway!)

Actually, I can't say that I only listed the special ones, because I think I listed the regular TG-16 controller. But that was only because it had to be purchased separately because the original system only comes with one controller.
