You can connect it wireless without the wifi adaptor as well.

You can also get your Wii online with a Nintendo USB Connector.

I have a Datel one, it was cheaper than the official Nintendo LAN adapter (and available ealrier!).
It works super fine. It only had a problem with one firmware update, but Nintendo relased a patch to fix this problem a few days later, and it was almost surely caused by the complaints about the Datel LAn adapter not working anymore (at the time the official one was not out yet).

So if you decide for a compatible one you should be fine as with that from Nintendo.

On a note, the Datel one has the same shape as the original (sharing the cut angle rectangular form of all the wii furniture) but it is white and has 2 blue lights indicating usb and network activities. A lot prettier than the Nintendo one.

If you are having trouble connecting using wifi, I highly recommend the LAN adapter as it is completely 100% future-proof, plus you don't even need to a computer to use it. Without Windows drivers, the USB adapter is useless.
