Late to the party on this one but LOVED the single player - great story, good learning curve and even-handed enemy AI. Pretty good voice acting from some ex-Eastenders to boot!
It's the online play that has been the real hook for me though. Although my kill:death ratio at the start was 1:5, I've now got it down to 1 kill to every 2 deaths or so (ahem...not something I'm proud of!) but find that the levelling up is improving me and the challenges you unlock as you progress are a brilliant way of keeping you coming back for more.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - especially considering the online community are lot more forgiving than the Halo3 lot which, when you have ratios like mine, is a necessity!

The singleplayer was wonderful but the multiplayer was terribly overrated and lacking in many areas. Whose idea was it to have a leveling up system? Sure it still isn't hard to kill a level 55 with a pistol but still, the mere idea of this is just outrageous. It's a tactical FPS, put everybody on the same slate. Anyway, the singleplayer was beautiful and cinematic. The last twenty minutes were amazing and so was the nuke scene. Wonderful.

Everyone is kind of on the same slate - levelling up just gives you a few benefits, like new weapons and my personal bug-bear in FPS' quicker reloads.
Know where you're coming from with this but feel that it's one of the better online FPS experiences. The DLC is very overpriced though...especially considering you're really only getting 3 maps you'll actually use.

My thread on Call of Duty 4 must have evaporated...
Anyway, great game. One of my favourite games ever.
The single player campaign is so epic, it's amazing. I love how you become so attached to the NPC's that fight alongside you the whole time, and both the sniper mission with MacMillan and the final mission are just fantastic.
Multiplayer is the reason I still play it though. It's just so much funner than other online FPS' I've played (e.g. Halo 3...) and never gets old. I really like the perks too. Even though it can seem unfair, a good player can play without all of the perks like red-dot sight and martyrdom that you eventually unlock. They're really just incentives to play that little bit longer and get into each prestige to unlock everything again.

Since I'm on the PC version I wouldn't know anything about that. Sorry, had to throw that in. Also, I haven't really checked yet but are there custom maps/mods for Call of Duty 4 or did Infinity Ward not release an editor?

On the subject of COD4, what is the GOTY Edition going to have in it?

It has the 4 new maps (Creek, Chinatown, Killhouse and Broadcast) but I'm not sure what else it has, if anything else.

I played a PC demo of it, and maybe it was just a bad demo, but I really wasn't enjoying myself. I'll rent when I get a 360, but I don't think it's the game for me. The demo was singleplayer-only, so at the very least I have to try the Multiplayer before I make my decision.
EDIT: Well, my brother's getting it for Christmas, so I suppose I'll try it then.

I just got this over the weekend (I know I'm running late) and played through the first 2 missions. So far it's awesome! I liked the boat at the begining of the game with all the waves crashing and the water flying through the air....AWESOME. It got even better when you had to exit the boat.
Can't wait to play it again....and also the multiplayer.

For the longest time I really could not stand this game at all. It was such a step down from Call of Duty 3, they just turned it into a trigger-finger manic shooter that required less thinking and more spraying.
That of course was before I played modes other than Team Deathmatch. I didn't realize there was a game like Search and Destroy where you only get one life per round. Now THAT is a fun mode =D. So though I never really got into CoD4 because I hated it for so long, the nearly identical CoD: WaW has seen heavy play from me as of late.

My friend has the same idea of Call Of Duty 4 (or as he calls it, Cock Of Doody 4).
But if ZP liked it, it must be a good game (his reviews are based on insluting games, so you get the picture).

Okay fair enough if you don't like it mate but "step down from Call of duty 3"?
NO just NO! This is by far the worst and most insulting thing I've ever heard said about Call of duty 4. I can understand if someone isn't a fan of the COD series or maybe even prefers WW2 to Modern warfare settings but to say it's a step down from COD3 is just... too far! Call of duty 3 is by far the single worst game of the series and a pile of putrid crap! Treyarch themselves even admitted it wasn't good, saying it wasn't very high quality because the short time they had to develop it (under a year)

Now that you say it, that DOES seem like a harsh insult to Call Of Duty 4.

I play it now and again between other games. People will still continue to play it for ages, some who won't have call of duty 5, some who won't like it, some who will prefer COD4 anyway etc.

I beat the single player mode last weekend.....Awesome game! I have not played much of the multiplayer as of late only because my time spent playing others online is being used to play Gears 2 co-op.

Yup it's really good. I completed it on regular then veteran a year later.
Veteran was tough but it was fun with only a couple frustrating parts
