Why isn't the Commodore 64 in the US Virtual Console? I guess that would just make to much sense.

Probably the same reason we don't have the meaga mans or vectormans yet. Lazy Nintendo.

I thought it had more to do with the console's popularity in Europe? Nintendo may be hoping that as games are released in Europe, they'll get free word-of-mouth advertisement over in NA, where gamers are less familiar with the games?

A European C64 runs slower than a US one (50hz vs 60hz), and there are other significant differences in the emulation - it's not quite as simple as just recompiling it. Then there's the ratings to be re-done, the localization, in-fact loads of other things to consider.
Also, is the C64 in Europe returning enough revenue? There's little point wasting effort on a US version if the returns aren't good enough.

The C64 was huge in North America as well. The C64's role in the console market is of course complicated a bit by the Crash... ;)

They re probably testing to see if enough of us will download C64 games before giving the US and the rest of world the same pleasure.

The C64 game libraries between the two continents are very different, and although I'm probably biased, the European C64 games scene was superior. So perhaps that's why we're seeing it in Europe first? A recognition of the machine's status as a gaming platform?
Also, the people behind the C64 Virtual Console are based in Germany, so it makes sense for them to be releasing it in Europe first.

I buy both of these explanations.

This was kind of before my time, but didn't the game development for the C64 in US die along with the video-game crash back in the early 80's while it kept going in europe? Or have I completely misunderstood this ;)
I think it would only be fair if US got the C64 games aswell, but maybe Nintendo fears that they wouldn't get many downloads at all because of the crash and it's loss of reputation in comparison to europe. But then I think that downloadable games should be global anyway so all regions have the same library of games, regions are the work of the devil ;)

I think the bigger question is why Australia and New Zealand haven't seen any Commodore 64 games yet. From what I've heard, the C64 was released over here, so why are we seeing a repeat of the TurboGrafx-16 problem?

Damn straight. Its incredibly frustrating getting absolutely no games when there's a C64 only week

If you are in Australia / New Zealand follow this guide to buy C64 games. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al_OE7V965k)
Although, now you loose points when you change regions (buy European points).
I heard it works.
Hope it helps.

You either need a credit-card, or European Wii points, but it is possible.
Australian and New Zealands residents could also ask some European friends to gift them those games, be it just because, for some hard cash or gift another game back.

Nintendo is a smart business. I know that we all (including me) think, "Nintendo should release the C64 in the U.S." I'm sure Nintendo just wants to make sure that they'll make money if they were to do it. Who can blame them. As an ultra-capitalist American, I'm not going to fault them. I just wish for the opportunity to play Airborne Ranger and Roadwar Europa again.

Yeah, I had a c64 growing up in australia. So did several friends and neighbours. It certainly wasn't an uncommon console in the 80's in australia.
I got the last ninja 1 and 2 on VC by changing my region to UK and using my debit card.

Well i about 3000-3500 point in my account at the moment so that wound means about $45AUD the same price as a disc based game outside Australia .
But i be waiting for the day where a whole heap of C64 titles landfs in the Australian shop channel in pretty much similar fashion as the Turbografx .

Have anyone mailed Commodore Gaming and asked if they know some more of the Australia situation? Maybe they at least can give an answer if it's their fault or Nintendo's.
Since it's basically the same as with the TG16 I would guess it's the latter.

C64 games would be nice in the US (I'm in the UK with a US Wii) but I have thousands of C64 titles in my collection anyways heh... not so important for me ;)

I will be glad if/when they release Commodore 64 in NA I also think they should release Commodore VIC. I was a big Commodore fan back in the day.
