In your opinion, what is the best Sonic the Hedgehog game out of the Megadrive/Genesis entries?

I was going to purchase the original, but was afraid to because I've heard 2 was the best one. I'm too strict on Wii Points to buy each game. Anyway, post your answers, I'm too lazy to make a poll. :P

no1 was pretty good but limited and the rest were just too over the top with over large levels

2 had perfect, tight levels with just the right amount of potential exploration.

I believe the Sonic Mega Collection has the games PAL optimised too, if that's an issue for you.

Sonic 2 is easily the best of the bunch. One of the best platformers ever made, and still amazingly playable even today.

Yeah, I remember renting Mega Collection. It's a fantastic bundle, from what I remember. See, I've never owned a Genesis, so I haven't really gotten to experience the old Sonic games.

Maybe I'll consider purchasing a used copy of Mega Collection. After all, it is cheaper than buying each game on VC separately.

I would aim to buy the Mega Collection since you get 7 games. And I don't think it costs a lot these days.

So go for that, but he you only want one game then Sonic 2 is the best one.

Starting to sound like a bit of broken record but Sonic 2 by a country mile. As already stated best level design by a mile (particularly the spectacular casino level) and the addition of the sonic superspin attack really moved the gameplay on.

Though it's an easy thing to do, I think everyone forgets just how good the handheld Sonic games have consistently been.

Sonic Advance 1-3 were brilliant games, and I think Sonic Rush on the DS is the best Sonic game since the MD days. Sonic Rush Adventure is coming out on the DS next an I'm right on top of that.

Goes to show that Sonic really is best in 2D :D

Nah, it's still the same 2D levels with 3D bosses and bonus games. Not so different from teh good old days, in other words.

Rush was a fantastic game, didn't put it down until I got S ranks on every level. Only problem is, that didn't take as long as I'd like. Hopefully Rush Adventure will sort that problem. If it does, it'll be incredible.

:idea: My guess is that when they release Sonic 3, they'll release a patch to allow you to play Sonic 2 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles or when Sonic and Knuckles is released they'll release the patch with the game making it more expensive. That's my guess, I'm interested in everybody's theories! So what's yours?

Honestly, I think they'll release Sonic 2 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles as unique, separate, downloads, that you'll have to pay for again. I hope to be wrong, but I doubt it.

Every ROM of Sonic & Knuckles I've seen has separated them like this, so it may be the only way to do it.

I have Secrect Rings and its bloody good. It takes awhile to get used to, but once you do the good times roll. ^^

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my absolute fav. Ah, the hours I d waste finishing that game over and over again. :)

I reckon they will just give us the S+K games as separete downloads. Its a shame they can't just offer a discount to those who own Sonic 2+3 already (And likewise to the SF2 sequals)

All the 3D Sonic games haven't been more than mediocre. Sonic is just much better in 2D. That said, while some of the newer GBA and DS titles might be fun and blazing fast (i.e. Sonic Rush) I still prefer the originals. The former just feel less like platformers and more like races to get to the end, while the latter have a much better balance of the two.

It'll be interesting to see how Bioware's Sonic RPG will turn out.

Sonic 2 is probably the best. But I've got a special fondness of Sonic 1. It was the first 16-bit game that I owned and it's what sold me on the Genesis back in 1991.

To be honest, I never really liked Sonic. It feels too linear to me, for some reason. That's why I only wanted to buy one Sonic game for my VC collection, I'm more of a Mario and Donkey Kong guy anyway.

Those were fun times. 14 Chaos Emeralds (Well, 7 Chaos and 7 Super Emeralds), great level designs, and of course, Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic

I know I'm replying to an old topic but.

Out of the Mega Drive games my order of preference goes:

1: Sonic the Hedgehog
2: Sonic 3 & Knuckles (the two aren't worth playing individually)
3: Sonic 2
4: Sonic CD
6: Sonic Spinball
7: Sonic 3D

The Saturn version of Sonic 3D is actually a lot better than the Mega Drive version. It has good 3D bonus levels and the soundtrack is excelent. It's still not a great game but I enjoyed it for what it was (wheras I couldn't enjoy the Mega Drive version at all).

But my favourite Sonic game of all time is Sonic Adventure! And yes, I do like most of the 3D Sonic games.

Yes sonic 3 has a save feature. It will save at the beginning of each level. However if you get to act 2 in a level then go off and come back on and load your game it will start you back at act 1. But i think sonic 2 is best. Then sonic 3 & knuckles. Then Sonic 3 solo. Then Sonic & Knuckles solo. Then sonic 1.
I love sonic 1. But after playing the other ones you can see its flaws and see that the speed of it sucks compared to the others. Despite the fact it is still pretty fast.

I see Sonic & Knuckles as more of an expansion pack than a game on its own. In a way I don't think they should have allowed you to play it on its own, they should have made it so it only works when plugged into Sonic 2 or 3 (or Sonic 1 for the bonus game), it's not really playable on its own.

Amen. Unless I'm totally mistaken thus topic came up a few months ago ANC that was my own opinion. And Sonic pretty much lost his mojo after the MD games all the way to the GBA games, which were actually fantastic. Sonic 2 though, is the Sega gospel.

I greatly prefer them. And i still prefer 3D Sonic's. Ive grown up with sonic though and i will always prefer him to mario. you'll be dissapointed with Galaxy. Far too few (read: pretty much none) random deaths due to glitches, a good camera, superb controls and no stupid and incredibly boring knuckles treasure hunts. :p

It's like the complete opposite of SA2.... Y'know being a GOOD game and all :p

Sorry..............but em..........i like that one an all :p. At first i didnt and i dont like the load times no matter what. BUT me and my friend enjoy it. Once people actually get past that sprint bit on wave ocean the game is actually good. Its just load times that suck.

Also i didnt find knuckles' treasure hunts that boring in SA2. Also before you ask. Yes i liked Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Secret Rings, Sonic Adventure one, Meh to sonic heroes & Meh to sonic shuffle. I think thats most of the 3D ones. Also i like Sonic 3D Blast/Flickies' Island BUT only the saturn version. I used to like the MD version but after playing the saturn the MD version sucks.

Now leave me alone. I like blue hedgehogs more than fat a** plumbers. Uh-oh i overdid it again didnt I. Please dont hurt me :cry:

Actually Galaxy owes SA2 a lot. After all it was Sonic Adventure 2 that was first to do the whole gravity changing thing, and the spherical levels as well, six years before Galaxy. :p

You are correct (Although It wouldnt suprise me if this was in an earlier game on PSX/N64/Saturn. Mind you they used a similar idea for that 3D sonic game on Saturn didnt they?)

Im not convinced SA2 had spherical planets first but even if they did at least Super mario galaxy managed to get it right :p (Moving around on those things in SA2 was a nightmare)

Sonic Shuffle is a Mario Party rip and i cant believe im about to say this but........id rather play Mario Party than that. I never even played a minigame in Sonic Shuffle. Load terms were just unbearable and gameplay was slow.

And for 3D Blast. Did you play the MD Version or Saturn Version. The MD version is good first time round IMO but then it gets old. But the saturn version just feels great. Gameplay is no different. But for some reason the graphics make it feel so much more better. It just makes the game so much more playable. And im not one for graphics. But they just suit the game so much more on saturn.
Still im tired of arguing. This was a Best Sonic topic and its turned into a Sonic VS Mario topic lol.

The developers of Ratchet and Clank claimed that the spherical levels were their idea. I don't know when they were made, I've never played those games so I have no idea. Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview that he'd never heard of it.

SA2 was kind of experimental with lots of new gameplay ideas that had never been done before. They are both great games for different reasons, it's hard to choose between SA2 and Galaxy overall.

For you maybe but not for many other people. SA2 seems to be a hit or miss game with people. Personally with me it's a miss.

Secret rings was really good. It was fun to play the levels beat your score and unlock stuff. The multiplayer thing was cool too, it was like a little mario party. And the music kicked ass. And I'd probably prefer sonic over mario. Sonic is cooler, but I prefer mario games over sonic

Sonic 2 was the best, it was pretty good.

Sonic 3 wasn't terrible and you could save.

Sonic 3D Blast was passable, but kinda boring.

Sonic and Knuckles had boring, really long levels and you couldn't even save.

Sonic the Hedgehog ( Gen.) was awful, one of the worst games I've ever played.

I haven't played much of the 3D games, but Adventure might be my fave because even though its glitchy and not very polished it was fairly fun, and I think it could've been great it was given the attention the 3D Mario games get. ( Not as good as Mario of course, but great)

Storyline/mini cutscenes explaining events and how you get from level to level.
Boss at end of every level.
Improved graphics
Superb music
Save feature
Fun multiplayer (although Sonic 2's is better)
Brilliant levels such as hydrocity, casino night, launch base zone, lava reef, Sky sanctuary, death egg.



I wonder if Sonic 3 & knuckles would be the fan favourite instead of two if it had been released as one game as originally intended.
I just find it so much better than Sonic 1 & 2 in every way. Although I do love Sonic 1 and 2 a lot just not as much.

Best Sonic? I'd say Sonic 2, by far. My second choice I guess would be Sonic Advance. That one was pretty good. The first Sonic was alright, but not spectacular. That's all I got, though; those were the only Sonic games I played so far. :)
