Time to decide, name one game from each platform you own, which you think is the best of the bunch this year. I'll start us off with my favourites.
PC - Portal / The Orange BoxFor its intellectual puzzles, the cold humour of G.L.A.D.O.S. and the best game ending I've ever seen/heard
Wii - Guitar Hero IIISimply because it rocks, is really addictive, and has a unique style of gameplay for me (having not played the previous GH games)
DS - New Super Mario Bros.Because it resembles a true classic Mario Bros. but super enhanced with the new graphics sound, with the multiplayer battle and mini-game modes being an excellent bonus

Wii: Super Mario Galaxy
Even though there has been a lack of really brilliant Wii games, Galaxy gets my vote. Best game on Wii easily, love this even more than 64.
DS: New Super Mario Bros.
Even though this came out in most countries in '06, I haven't really loved enough DS games since this. Perfect 2D platforming with great graphics.
Xbox 360: The Orange Box
Never played Half-Life 2 before I got this, but what a game. Best FPS I've played by quite a mile. Worth it for HL2 alone, but with two brilliant expansions and another two great games it's the best deal in gaming history.

PC: The Orange Box: One of the greatest FPS games of all time, a fantastic FPS puzzler, and the best online multiplayer FPS game ever in one package? Yes please!
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy: No explanation needed.
DS: Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2: The best of the Ouendan/EBA series yet, will keep you entertained for weeks if you try to get high scores on everything. Lots of flair, great music (J-pop haters be damned) and really fun.

Lots of flair, great music (J-pop haters be damned) and really fun.I'll hopefully be getting that for christmas, I look forward to it, I really like the first game and EBA.
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy, that's obvious.
DS, can't decide until I've played Ouendan 2 and Sonic Rush Adventure.

Ill just do a couple :
Wii : This is tough due to the fact that i only got 3 wii games so far that have been released this year. I also got one which was released end of last year and thats what i like most. So im gonna go with that :
Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 : Like i said it came out end of last year but out of the 4 wii games i got this year its the one i like most. Its one awesome fighting game and it makes a good game for those who dont like DBZ. Seriously there is about 120 characters (All though most are just different forms of other characters), a bunch of huge destructible arenas where you can roam freely, The ability to level up every character in a unique way, Tag matches, a nice lengthy story mode and several other game modes to keep you busy. Plus you can send overs your customized characters thanks to a cool password feature. Not to mention there are a bunch of moves in the game. Its seriously a great fighting game and in my opinion its the best fighting game ive ever played.
Xbox 360 : Portal - The Orange Box :
So far ive only played a bit of this and also i havent played the others since i only got the game today. But im loving what ive played of this so far. Its a very unique puzzler and i just love mucking around with those portals. One of the best puzzlers ive played :D
EDIT : Beat the main game today (Not the extra challenges and stuff) and it was friggen awesome. This definatly is staying as my favourite. I played Half-Life 2 and its good but i prefer portal overall. Its sooooo good. Now im gonna do some advanced mode and also go through some other levels with some cheats to see if i can find some cool glitches and stuff . And you gotta love the ending theme
DS : Sonic Rush Adventure :
Its a nice fun adventure indeed and with many memorable levels and catchy themes. The graphics are in a cool 2.5D style and occasionally the game will go to full 3D for certain situations. Levels are a nice length, Minigames are fun, Theres a bunch to do after story mode is finished and there is online play. However story mode can become a pain just because of the character marine .
Like i said for wii i know its not a game from this year but the only other games i got this year for wii were Sonic & The Secret Rings, Metal Slug Anthology & Mario Strikers Charged (Another game i got today and have only played 2 matches of so far). And i got Tenkaichi 2 this year and it out ranks them all so i had to go with it. If i get any other games for christmas that i prefer ill change it but for now im sticking :P

Hey everyone who wants to play the redundancy game!!!
Wii- Super Mario Galaxy - Duh.
PC- Orange Box - One of the best FPS series ever? Check. A game which boasts one of the freshest and most innovative concept in recent years? Check. A huge upgrade to one of the most popular and fun multi-player fragfests ever? Check. 5 Triple A titles for 50 dollars. Damn right its the PC game of the year.
PC runnerup- WoW: Burning Crusade - More like Burning Crack Rock. Blizzard really is the king of supplying virtual crack.
PS2- God of War 2
I don't own a 360 or a PS3 but all my friends do so out of the games I got a chance to really spend some time with here are my thoughts.
X360- BioShock - I don't care how biased this statement is:Original game design and engrossing storyline puts Halo 3 and its generic protagonist (not to mention generic everything else) to shame. Never got to play CoD4 so this could be subject to change.
PS3- Uncharted - Not very hard to achieve when there are only two other games in contention.

Well like I said I don't own a 360 or PS3. The only games I got to play for the PS3 are Uncharted, Resistance, and Warhawk. CoD4 and Ratchet may very well be better although I've heard the 360 version of CoD4 is superior (this might not be true though its just a few things I have heard from my friend who isn't always right).

Hopefully not, I'm getting it for my new PS3 instead of the 360 (as my 360 is broken)... reviews seem to have rated them both equally anyway.

Like everybody else:
PC: Orange Box
This had two of my favorite game endings ever. Episode 2 and Portal. Wow. For all the other great points, just read what everybody else said, it's the same thing. Oh, and custom maps in TF2 and Portal are a blast.
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy
I probably don't need to explain much
DS: Contra 4
Only thing I played on the DS this year. But still c'mon, it's Contra.
Edit:
Best Indie game of 2007:
Knytt Stories:
Brilliant gameplay, atmosphere, music, and style. All packaged neatly with a level editor and a robust community. Also, free.

I've been too busy with Z-dub and Galaxy to go back to portal just yet. Are there custom Portal maps already? If so I have two questions. Are they official releases by Valve or are they user created content? Second, which ones should I be on the lookout for? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Wii - Metroid Prime 3
Simply the best game on the Wii. Graphics, sound and mostly the controller is perfect every second of this wonderful game. (no, I don't like Mario games)
Virtual Console - Super Metroid
This was a hard category since there are so many great games on the VC. But from what I've downleaded it's the best one, closely followed by Soldier Blade and Mega Man. All of them are first time play, I'm really reliving the childhood I never had.
PC - World In Conflict
To be honest, I haven't played that many PC games this year, mostly WoW. But this game is absolutely great with great need of tactics in the gameplay and good balance.

Can speak in Wii terms I'm afraid, but a great shout from Joxe means I get two games!
Wii - Guitar Hero III. Just plains ROCKS. Great tracks a nice learning curve (well, at least until you get to the hard setting then it shoots through the roof!) and easily accessible. I'd never played a GH before and this has got me hoping for downloadable content, expansion packs or at least Wii releases of the first two!
VC - Paper Mario. Blew me away. Wasn't expecting much from this - it seems to be a bit like marmite round these parts - but unlike marmite, I actually REALLY liked this. Played twice now, once just going through and second after doing a bit of research and setting some goals (beating Klark Koopa(?) for example). Awesome game with hidden depths.

Wii: Resident Evil 4 / Runner-ups: Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy
A great game that hasn't diminished in fun since its initial release two years ago, made exponentially better by precise IR controls.
VC: Shining Force / Runner-ups: Dynamite Headdy, Donkey Kong Country 2
While I'm big on the great platformers of yore, I'm an even bigger nut about strategy games, and my pick is both exquisite fun and quite challenging.
DS: Contra 4 / Runner-ups: Worms: Open Warfare 2, Puzzle Quest
Just one of those games in which one can actually enjoy getting one's ass whooped. ;)
Mac: Fairy Tower
Pinball goodness.

For Wii, I'd pick Resi 4 as best of '07, just pipping SMG to the post.

Wii- super mario galaxy
game cube- well twilight princess is 06 so... I don't own any 07
DS- sorry but Phantom Hourglass.
VC-DKC2 (just guessing)
Pit 42
30th December 2007, 10:35 PM
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy, hands-down. No contest there.
DS - None. I just bought a brand-new DS Lite and there were absolutly no games I even wanted to consider buying this year (I suck at Contra and I don't like the way you control everything with the stylus in Phantom Hourglass).
VC - Sin and Punishment. In my top 5 favorite VC games.
Phantom

Here are mine:
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy
The best game I've played on wii this year...but it didn't exactly have much competion
Runner up - Pangya?
DS - Phantom Hourglass
It was a lot of fun!... except for that stealth dungeon which I really hated
Runners up - Rune Factory, Hoshigami Remix
VC- Paper Mario
I missed it the first time on N64 so I was really glad to get to play it
Runner ups - Sin & Punishment, Kirby
PS2- Disgaea 2 & Rogue Galaxy
Both were great games for me!
Runners up- Graffiti Kingdom, FF12, Kingdom Hearts 2 (er...when did they come out?)
Psp - Disgaea Afternoon of Darkness & Tales of the World
Come on do I really have explain? Its Disgaea! Updated and portable!
Also with TotW I just like all the "Tales of" games I've played so far
Edit: Er...flip a coin for my picks for ps2 & psp...its too hard to choose!

I'll add a few in:
VC: Paper Mario, never got to play it the first time round on my N64.
PS3: Call od Duty 4, what a game.

Wii - Metal Slug Anthology.
The game is just Brilliant. I play it with friends ALL the time. 6 Classic games and one brand new one all on 1 disc! It might not be as immersive as other games, but it definently is my game of the year.
Runners Up:
Mario Galaxy - I know some of you may be disgrunteled that I didn't make this my number one pick. This game is NOT overrated, I was addicted to it. For a week. I will go back to it soon though.
Super Paper Mario - This game was great and made the list only due to a bogus fault with Nintendo of Europe - their release schedual. Its a great game, quite intuitive, but as soon as I finished it, I traded it in to get Galaxy; without doing any sidequests.
DS - Contact
This game is stirring. It has a very strange yet oddly 'capturing' storyline. The music is great and really gets the extremely surreal feeling of the whole game. You absolutely must play this game. It really deserves a sequel.
Runners up
Phantom Hourglass - Really good, intuitive controls for the Boomerang etc, But walking like that gets annoying sometimes. I never got very far into it, as I want to complete WindWaker first, but what I have played it brilliant.
Pheonix Wright: Justice for all - Great story lines and cases, brilliant underrated game. Your really feel for the characters. Like watching Law and Order; but funnier.
Geometry Wars Galaxies - Great Fun; very addictive, very attractive and simplistic visuals.
Virtual Console - Ocarina Of Time
Many pronounce this game as the greatest game ever, and with its great controls, immersive world and enthralling Story it is easy to see why. This game is the stuff of Legend.
Runners Up
Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure - Great game, a Close second, The high point of the truely brilliant Bonk series.
Bonk's Revenge - Great game; The Controls just weren't as tight as the third and first games.
Neutopia - Only a Legend of Zelda Clone? I don't think so. Indeed; it does take the story from Zelda; you could ad-lib the names of Zelda characters into it; yet it predates Link to the Past; and introduces a load of great ideas into the genre.
Honorable Mentions
Sin & Punishment: Successor of Earth - NEVER BEFORE RELEASED! And its got a really cool 'arcade-y' feel.
Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels - Amazingly addictive. Great release from the Hanabi festival.

Wii: Super Mario Galaxy
No other game has come close to total immersion on the Wii, I believe. Old School Mario goodness mixed in with Shiny New Wii graces, it is what we have been waiting for since the launch of the Wii, and Nintendo has finally delivered. With awesome Gameplay, interesting Physics, and some sweet graphics, this was certainly the Wii's best for 2007.
My Runner's up:
3: Guitar Hero III
2: Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
1: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Nintendo DS: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Nintendo really didn't take too many risks with the Zelda formula here. What they did take risks with, however, was the control scheme. All touch-screen controls made this game fresh to play. After a few minutes, it becomes easy to maneuver Link around the various locals he travels to on this sea-adventure, and makes combat fast and frantic. The boss battles, which I find are not mentioned often enough, are some of the most fun experiences within the game, mixing it up so that each one is a little different, or sometimes completely different. True A+ material, and yet another reason why the DS is awesome.
My Runner up:
Contra 4
That's right, my only runner up for the DS gets its own blurb too. Why?
Cuz it's freakin' awesome!!!
Contra 4 is some of the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time, because it returns to its old roots back on the NES. The gameplay very much resembles that of Contra, Super C, and Contra 3: The Alien Wars, and so does the difficulty. This game is hard. But that's not a bad thing. It keeps you coming back for more, because as you keep dying, you keep getting better.
This game also has unlockable versions of the NES version of Contra and Super C, giving you a whole lot of game for your dollar.
Virtual Console: Super Metroid
Come on people. Why isn't this on more lists??? Super Metroid still remains a true classic, and it's still a joy to play. With tight controls, some awesome 16-bit art, and non-stop action, Super Metroid is one of the games that defined the Super Nintendo, and the 16-bit era as a whole.
Simply amazing.
My runners up:
3: ActRaiser
2: Paper Mario
1: Sin and Punishment
PC: The Orange Box
The Orange Box has anything you'd ever want. A solid single-player experience? Check with Half Life 2. A solid and balanced multi-player experience? Team Fortress 2 with the Check. One of the most unique and hilarious experiences ever? Portal ftw. Seriously, if First-Person is your thing, get The Orange Box. Everything in it is pure awesomeness, all in a nice Orange package. Valve truly outdid themselves with it.
(Although, it doesn't make Steam suck any less :()
EDIT: Ah, nearly forgot my Indie award!
Best Indie Game: Desktop Tower Defense
Remember Tower Defense in Starcraft? It rocked. DTD brings back the same concept with competent creeps and a wide array of different towers to choose from and upgrade. You'll spend hours playing this, trying to perfect your Build Order and Arrangement. Tons of Fun, and Free to Boot.
Indie Game that I wanted to Come out this Year but will have to Wait some: Chrono Crisis
Seriously, have you seen this? If you haven't, go to www.chrono-crisis.com. Quite possibly one of the best looking fan-made sequels for ANY game, this Chrono Trigger-bases sequel promises to be absolutely awesome when it's finished. Here's to a hopeful 2008 release date.

you cannot miss out a game you haven't played. Simply didn't interest me enough yet. And no matter what anyone else says, a boxset of old games with one interesting new title (portal) and one game I'll never play (TF2) may very well never earn my hard-earned cash.

Somebody posting on a VC forum isn't usually phased by games being old. Half Life 2 and Ep 1 are the only old games and those only came out about 3 and 2 or so years ago. Anyway, at 10 dollars a game, how can you go wrong?
