View Full Version : 2nd remote on NES Zelda?

I'm playing the original Legend of Zelda on the Virtual Console. I'd like to save my game without dying. On the old NES I used to press "Start" on the main controller then on controller 2 I'd press up and A at the same time to jump to the "Save Continue Retry" screen. This doesn't seem to work on the Wii (I'm using 2 Wii remotes).

I have a second Wii Remote synched up to my Wii, and when I press "A" on it the 2nd blue light is illuminated. If I play another virtual console game, like Super Mario Bros., I can use 2 player mode just fine, with the second controller controlling Luigi. But when I'm in the Zelda inventory screen and press up and A or up and "2" nothing happens.

Has anyone had any luck saving without dying on the original Legend of Zelda? Any thoughts on how to do it?

Just don't die.

Just don't die.

Congratulations on the immense constructivity of your post. I applaud your finely tuned sense of timely sarcasm in someone's hour of need. Bravo.

As for the original post, the 2nd Wiimote might connect if you go to the home screen, the bottom field (controller settings I think) and then press 1 and 2 simlutaneously in the order you want the Remotes to be allocated. If not, connect a GC pad to port 2 on the Wii and use that for your trick; might work.

Can't you just create a save state by hitting the home button and then clicking on the wii menu? I don't understand why you would want to use the old trick when the wii VC let's you create save states for all games except N64 games.

The home button saves still leave the issue of in-game progression saves unsolved, as it only functions as a sleep and resume feature. If you want to leave the in-progress session, to perform whatever other thing within that game, saves become handy. An example might be leaving one game in Zelda III to start a different one, but wanting the progress for the first save slot to remain.

If I want to try something that I'm not sure will work (that uses up resources, like bombs, hearts, and keys) I'm out of luck if it doesn't work unless I can save and go back to where I was.

Does someone know if I can somehow copy save states in the Wii Data Management menu? Make a "working" copy and go back to the original if things go wrong? Is that possible?

I also tried the "1 and 2" button trick on the home menu -- no dice.

I misread the first post I apologize. Though you were trying a trick to stop from dying. Although the elaborate sarcastic response to my sarcasm wasn't necessary it was still deserved.

Hit start then in the items menu hit Select and UP. Happy questing :)

I've been wondering the same thing. I keep dieing in Ninja Gaiden and being sent back to 6-1. It would be cool if this trick works. Has anyone tried?

Do you mean on the second controller? And by select, I assume you mean "-"? I think I tried that, but I'll try again.

Does this work for you on a Wii with two remotes, or are you guessing?

Just in case anyone else cares. I tried to copy a save state last night and the Wii would not let me copy the file.
