Hello All,
I have been in the mood for a scary game. You know one of those games that can really make you jump! In your opinions, what are some of the most frightening games ever? |

Good thread
I'd have to put the original Half-Life and Eternal Darkness on the top of my personal list. The rest of the so-called scary games, Silent Hill and the like, had little to no effect on me. Resident Evil 4 also had its moments, though consensus opinion may very well place that game in the pile marked 'atmospheric' rather than scary. Occasionally Gears of War had shocking moments, but you usually shot them. For me, not much else has stood out over the many years past. Give the first two on the list in the unlikely event that you have not already. I can, to my great regret, not offer further examples. That being said, I'm fascinated to know what this thread presents

Too easy!
System Shock 2 And another game that can get pretty scary in some situations is Thief, though to work it requires the player to build its own tension. I had some true panic experiences playing Thief II. Like, brutally shutting off the PC, jumping on the lights switch to turn them on, play some music and walk back and forth in the room. |

I've just recently downloaded Doom 3 for the PC. Now that is a creepy game. They use the darkness very well for hiding enemies. It's not just a case of 'let's make it dark to make a creepy' - there's a lot more intelligence behind the design... which is brilliant.

I'd probably go for Resident Evil 4, only scary one I've played. Also Half-Life 2 had it's moments, especially in Ravenholm.

The original Manhunt on PS2 was pretty scary in the gore sense. Especially when You had a headset microphone on, which the game used so that any noise you made (breathing, talking, etc) the enemies could hear and would follow that noise. It was good for making enemies come towards you.
Resident evil 2... My First scary game... Played it when I was 8 and was terrified of it... But I got over that and now I actually think some of the devices used in it are corny. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis: That's your best bet. That game not only had you kill zombies but put a lot of emphasis on the Choices you made; especially when cornered by Nemesis.

More terrifying than anything I've ever played.
People say Bioshock, and I yawn. People say DOOM 3 and I laugh. People say Condemned, and I wet my pants. Only 3 games to ever scare me, Resi 1 when it first hit and I was like 10. Silent Hill same deal, but 2 years later. Condemned at age 19. Project Zero was mildly haunting for the lil bit i played (Got it just before the 360 hit and it wasn't compatable

Although I have never played it, I hear Fatal Frame always being mentioned when this question is asked. Not even sure what system its for. PS2 maybe?
I never really considered the Resident Evil games to be scary. Even when I was like 9 years old when they came out they never really had a frightening effect on me. I'd consider it more to be a game of tense situations, which the series is definitely great at doing. However, I hear Silent Hill does a much better job of being scary. It's weird I was looking through gaming forums just a week ago to try and find out what most people thought were the scariest games. Not sure what the exact rules are on this forum so I won't link or mention the forum that has the thread. However, Condemned, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame were on the tops of everyones list on average.
