Frankly, healthy competition never hurts. Sure, I like Nintendo's creations, but that won't stop me from considering other/additional options in the future. Microsoft really needs to get a grip on their shoddy hardware, though.

Already happened. Got announced at E3 a few hours ago. The 60GB machine is now officially $100 cheaper at $499 and there's and 80GB SKU coming to NA, bundled with MotorStorm for $599. The only question is when said price drop will reach Europe. It does seem that Sony has made an awful lot of miscalculations with the PS3's price point, what with the 20GB SKU being unloved and dumped and now this extremely rapid price drop for people who thought they were buying the top-of-the-line machine. I foresee a lot of unhappy customers...
