But in reality it would appear that most people at the time didn't have the issues you have with the game despite them arguably being more recognisable now. The same can be said of many other games.
Super Mario Galaxy, for instance, addresses all the problems of Super Mario 64 ten-fold but it will never be regarded with such nostalgia simply because it wasn't as revolutionary at the time as SM64 was to those of us who played it back in 96.
TP is probably a better technical acomplishment than OOT but most people who didn't come to it late still favour OOT because of the nostalgia they have from remembering how amazing it seemed at the time.
Goldeneye began the console FPS revolution and that's why it has its place in popular culture. A game coming along several years later and fixing its problems is commendable but wins no points for originality.
I take your point that you didn't enjoy it even then but if your talking about why it continues to have such a following then the obvious answer is that most other people did enjoy it quite alot.
