It's worrying that this is their big selling point. Right from the beginning almost all Sonic games have introduced more characters, playable or otherwise, despite myths and false memories it has never been just about Sonic.
I hope this game isn't going to be pure nostalgia and nothing new. Sonic Rush showed that there was still room for new ideas in 2D Sonics and I hope this will also be more than just a retro-style game.
