You missed a blueprint for Tiny Kong way back at the top of that huge mountain! Get up there! And you're lacking in the bananas for Chunky. Maybe you should back track."
Ugh. I hated DK64. I loved the other Rare N64 games like Banjo-Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day. But DK64? I was not feeling that one.
Although, DK64 did give us Lanky Kong, one of the most badass Donkey Kong characters in a long time. |
Nowadays, I'd probably agree with you on the "collect-a-thon" arguement, and you stated perfectly my reasons why, but I will say that as a child I loved collect-a-thons, or at least, I loved Donkey Kong 64.
In DK64, all the collectables simply represented an excuse to explore the wonderful and interesting environments, and to interact with the colorful characters, both good and evil, all the while having the bonus effect of continuing your progress in-game, giving you access to new environments to explore, etc.
And to be quite honest that still stands for me...to a point. The game is still the most charming Rare game I've ever played(...in fact, it's the only charming Rare game I've ever played), and such charm eases the inconvenient gameplay naunces that is synonymous with the "collect-a-thon" genre. To a point.
As much as I hate to admit it, no amount of charm will ever be able to truely make up for the fact that some things are absolute *****es to collect. If I EVER find myself in an instance where I'm stuck running 50 ****ing laps around trying to find some arbitrary collectable I conveniently "missed" the first time around, and having been forced to backtrack in order to get whatever the hell it is I need to get, I am going to ****ing scream!
Asside from that little quibble, DK64 stands as one of the few collect-a-thons I actually liked, as well one of the few Rare games I've ever considered truely "Good". And while we're more-or-less on the subject, what exactly was it that you liked about, oh...Banjo Kazooie? Afterall, it's a collect-a-thon as well(moreso than DK64, IMO), and yet you seem to have absolutely no problem with it.
